I know its hard to live up to Chrono Trigger, but Chrono Cross is MY favorite game of all time, beautiful design, amazing music, deep (and confusing) storyline. Not to mention its more like Chrono Trigger 3, seeing as Radical Dreamers came out prior to it's release (and it is a perfect sequel to that game). Also, while I rant, the battle system was rather entertaining, I loved the aspect of innate colors and morphing the battle field based on your play style.
Lots of value in integrating the tutorial in the real game. First time you start the game, run me through the basics while I actually do valuable things. The way the tutorial is structured in Dredmor, it doesn't feel like the real game at all, it's bizarre.
Yeah, my tutorial also bugged out >_<
I completely agree with your assessment there. Was useful in figuring out what to do, but didn't seem to at all portray an aura of 'fun.'
Good to know that it gets better later. A game can be slow, but it should not be dull. Looking forward to play this soon!
I play these games so you don't have to. ;)
Plus, I kind of like them. In much the same way that I like Braunschweiger but I don't recommend it to anyone.
Reminds me a bit of Where's my Water, but mostly for the fun fluid dynamics and goal of bringing a puddle of water somewhere. I might have to check this out, thanks!
Least Igor doesn't have the boner phone in this game like he did in P1 and P2.
In all seriousness I liked P3 for what it was. Sure I didn't enjoy the grinding but I just did 1 level a day until I thought I was good enough and then wasted the last 20 days of the month doing social links. Also I played the game on hard mode so trust me I've experienced a bunch of bullshit. However the final battle with Nyx was the saving grace of this game for me. I really loved how the the story concluded and overall it was a great RPG experience for me. I prefer P3's story and P4's combat system because I agree that P3's was really limiting in the actions you could perform.
I DESPISE this game. I had enough of doing the same boring thing over and over, at least other RPGs mix things up with different locations as opposed to making you listen to the SAME DAMN SONG AND GO THROUGH THAT PATHETIC DUNGEON. The storytelling is atrocious, why does it take 3 mother f#cking hours to get started? why does it take so damn long for something i should care about to happen? its hardly even a game, socialising and levelling up is go from x to y and press X or select the right answer for some whiny prick to be happy..this game is nothing more than a cheaply made grind and fetch quest fest
Wow, never even heard of this game before. Not a big fan of QTEs so I'll pass.
I'll tell you now that it gets better, there's actually some pretty fun scenes and only one or two more honestly dull stages. Though only about 40% of the way through the game, I think.
I actually picked this game up on Black Friday for $15, the directors cut. Was pretty pumped, excited to play it for a long time like you. Had good memories of Indigo Prophecy, etc. But then I played it for nearly a half hour and all I could do was walk around an apartment and get dressed and see a naked dude. It was still worth $50 on Goozex (1000 pts) so I get rid of it fast. I may play it some day but the money was worth more to me in the now. I look forward to any "beyond the first hour" content you put up or if you do a full review to see how you feel after you get deeper in the game.
It's one of those games that made me question whether we're really asking the right question at the end: "Would I Keep Playing?" Maybe it should be, "Should you keep playing?" Similar to your Knights Contract conclusion, "no, the normal gamer should not play this game, but I'm going to because I'm a masochist." I might have to mull this over.
I lost interest in this game at Minute 5.
Walked around the apartment for about 15 more minutes. I think I couldn't get out of the house (sounds like the cutscene never triggered for me or something) and then just quit.
I'm glad my pain could make for good lunch reading. :)
Honestly, other than the QTEs and some confusing level maps (I got lost a couple times) the game's pretty fun. The QTEs are major ragers though. Worst way to do them. Not all the bosses have them though. Just the really hard ones. Ha!
Haha, nice review. It was a good read on my lunch break. :)
The later projectile attacks are indeed near unavoidable... but that's because the game is tuned for your little melee attack with stick/tail. Did you know that almost any projectile can be deflected with this?
Woe to the gamer late to the Atlus release. Limited run plus end of platform life = sucks. Sorry to hear that.
It's impossible to find Radiant for a semi-decent price these days. Absolutely ridiculous.
I actually used the quick-draw gadgets quite a bit. The grappling hook is especially useful for disarming a gunman (and then clotheslining him with an attack as they stumble toward you). Otherwise, I agree. It's a game that just feels so awesome that the faults are quickly forgotten.
So this game just teleported into my friends n64 sack and he never previously owned it. so obviously turok is a time travler and this game is the nips tit. i literally disagree with your entire review. i still dont know why the poop he eats keys but needless to say its pretty badass. get fucked, im the man. Turok 4 life bish.
I loved the first hour of Okami. I guess some people can't appreciate the building of a story-line, and just want to jump into a game with almost no story-line and shoot things though.
Exactly
I bought the game. And I'd say it's an Action RPG. and like Ian said. An emphasis on action. There's a lot you can do. I play with a mod tho. It's called the Diplomacy mod. It's very fun and I think better then the original one, AKA Native. But you could call the game an RPG or Wargame and both fit the bill.
This is by far, the best game I have ever played. And I can't stop playing it :P
This should be mandatory reading for any gamer with a wife and kid(s). There can still be a balance, however. I still enjoy squeezing in some game time in moderation, though playing an RPG is difficult after not playing for awhile after I started the game, and they generally take many hours to complete. I look forward to when my son is old enough so we can play video games together. I hope he likes them the same way I did since a young child. It will be a very different experience now compared to when I was hooked after playing Pitfall on the Atari 2600.
Interesting review. I think it overlooks something regarding the genre, though. When it came out, Another World didn't join the ranks of "cinematic platformers" -- it more or less created the genre itself. Chiahi wrote the engine for the game, devised the vector handling system, and did all the graphics and other design features save the music.
Anyway, the interesting thing is despite its trial-and-error mechanics Another World still holds its own today as an experience. Even back when Flashback was released (initially thought to be the spiritual successor of Another World) and people were going nuts over the advances in graphics and animation, I always preferred Another World. Although its vector graphics are crude even by contemporary Amiga standards (being a first experiment, with all that entails), none of the other games could replicate the artistry and bittersweet beauty of Another World.
