For some reason, despite countless retries and tinkering, I can't get this game to play on my laptop. It loads up to a black screen with the violin music playing--and that's that. Blargh. Oh well. Still waiting on boxed copy of Resonance to arrive...
in your two posted screenhots, both are included in the game. It is split into two parts, first when they are kids, and second takes place after puberty.
This game is even shorter than The Blackwell Legacy, and while Rabbi Russell Stone may be as deep as Rosangela in that game, the supporting cast is pretty weak.
I too double-majored in hammer and shotgun, and used them to save and evacuate. But yeah, it's merely a very solid top-down action game with top-notch presentation. Worth the hype, but only just.
i actually don't have any problem with the combat system, it's pretty simple. just assign each character with different combat style ( all out, bla bla), and just keep your eyes on everyone HP, do a little persona switch here and there. but i agree on the grinding and tartarus. kinda annoying,
for the "friendship" part, it's just to spice thing a little, it's a common thing in japan. Japanese developers are heavily influenced by manga. and in Mangas a "connection" between the readers and the character is really important. Hoping that the the gamer and the character have this "relation" that is the human desire to make friends, to socialize. making every event in-game having more impact. Rather than running around killing everyone, not even care about the storyline. which i do a lot in GTA
No Persona 3 is way better the music, characters, story, events, ending. everything was better in persona 3. in persona 4 sometimes the weird or annoying social links 1. That annoying little bitch in music 2. that girl in drama is boring 3. That pedobear nurse it FUCKING CREEPY 4. Ai is a little bitchy whore. there 4 persona 3 FES is way better
I only recently finished The Odyssey level, which is the level before the boss fight in world 1-1, and that took a lot of retries and walk-aways. Can't get past the boss now. This game is pretty frustrating, though I do dig the music, just maybe not when I have to jump and slide and then kick all at once.
Even though you said "spoiler-free review," I skipped reading anything. Sorry, boss. Tara won a boxed edition from a fanart contest, and we're eagerly awaiting our copy so we can play together just like we did with the Blackwell games. Pretty stoked to see you giving it high praise though. 2012--the year of the points and clicks!
Has anyone forgotten the importance of simplicity in story telling? Perhaps it's the new translation, but Cave Story has some of the most poetic lines and most beautiful stories in games to this day. You are a robot who stumbles upon a crisis unfolding. The entire story is never spelled out for you, and just a casual play through will not tell you all there is to know. If you entered this game rushing ahead to try to find metroid-like secrets and upgrades you missed out on everything the game has to over. The story in Cave Story is fantastic, what an odd review indeed.
u make no sense!!!! it has the BEST BGM and i think the battle is nice and it was kinda hard. feel too easy? play the answer. meh.
and if u feel it's too long to start again than that's the punishment for some loser lyk u.
Well, I've finally played more of it to the point where I'm almost done on my part. Very nice review, you pretty much covered everything I was thinking about it. An action roguelike with this kind of item variation is supremely addicting and it has absurd replay value for such a cheap game. The items, above all else, completely carry the game.
The only thing I could really add is that the game itself really is absurdly dark to the point where I can't imagine any large publishers would think about touching it. It was made intentionally cute to balance out and hide some of its disturbing nature. Just about everything in this game could be considered both thought provoking or vile to different people. Ex: Your only means of defense are tears, and all the unlockable characters minus one are simply Isaac wearing different costumes or crossdressing (which I believe was inspired by one of McMillen's parents being forced to crossdress as a child under the watch of religious fanatic parents).
Tht threw me off too untill i realized tht ur forming bonds with different GROUPS of ppl and in persona 4 u talked to ur best friends and a couple other ppl so its more click based p3 had u being popular and liked by EVERYONE no matter what there circumstance
Please don't get mad, Greg. You're right. I think that's impossible to review something forgetting all our personal opinions. But if we can minimize it, we can be more impartials and more professionals. Just this. Love this website, I'm not saying for provocate you, just trying to say something with relevance for you.

Were the story/characters up to Blackwell standards or not really?

That's it. I'm going to dedicate my life to boycotting this game.
GET PUMPED.

Nah, I get it. :)
Thanks for reading and replying, I also updated this last year.
This game is probably the best example of a good idea in a music hybrid genre I'd love, but the way it was executed made me want to hurt things.
