Great start to what will certainly be a great series.

My experience with Diablo is so bittersweet. I started with the first one, but a bit late to the party, probably around 98. I remember I had just gotten a pretty sweet Pentium 166 with a rad 16 meg video card. I was ready to go. I played the game for weeks loving every minute of it. I had even found some web forums dedicated to the game and learned how to "dupe" items. This seemed amazing at first. I was SO excited. I got online and tried to find people to help me dupe equipment. Once I figured out how to do it myself I proceeded to dupe all my spell books so I could max out all my spells. I spent DOZENs of hours duping. It got to be work and I started to get bored with the game. I was spending all my time duping and wasn't even playing anymore. I then started playing online. I was having fun again and met some great people to team up with. However, then it got really bad. I met someone who invited me to go fight in hell, (the hard part of the game). He was very high level and had great equipment so I wasn't worried about it. We proceeded to go down and start fighting and just when things started getting bad, he intentionally lead all the bad guys to attack me. I got killed so fast I couldn't escape. He just laughed and laughed and then quit out so I couldn't get my stuff. It was gone forever. I was so depressed. This was my very first experience with online asshattery. I think of it as my coming of age in online gaming, when I realized it wasn't all roses and rainbows. The worst part was that I was hotblooded. I was young and vowed revenge. I had read online that it was possible to edit your save file to make yourself indestructible. You could supposedly even edit your file such that you could PVP someone up in the town, which was normally forbidden.

Anyway, I proceeded to download the hex editors in a late night marathon of diablo hacking. At this time in history, the only place to download such editors was "warez" sites. If you're familiar with these sites, you'll understand that they're not nice places on the web. But I didnn't care, I wanted to get this guy bad. But I was new to the ways of the web and not as savvy then. I ended up getting a virus and had to format and reload my whole machine. It was like the worst thing that has ever happened to me in gaming. Well, perhaps second worst. The worst thing was when my gamecube save card got corrupted and I lost every save game I had on there and there were literally dozens and dozens of save files, all gone. Anyway, I was so sad, I never played Diablo again. Not even Diablo II until about 5 years later. Just thinking about it now is devastating.

I'm enjoying it so far. :)

  • Diablo II - History and Gameplay   12 years 50 weeks ago

That's how my dad knew I was having an especially intense duel in Jedi Outcast.

Looking forward to the next part. Even though I've never played Diablo, I enjoy learning about how developers implement baiting systems into their games. There was an article on the science behind Dragon Quest IX's grinding on Gama Sutra that I found particularly interesting.

    Have fun in Overlord!

  • The Famitsu 40/40 List: A Review   12 years 51 weeks ago

Yep, only a launch title in North America. It was still a launch "window" game in Europe, and landed before Christmas, which is probably most important.

  • The Famitsu 40/40 List: A Review   12 years 51 weeks ago

Soul Calibur wasn't a launch title on the dreamcast, wasn't in the UK anyway.

  • The Sims 3   12 years 51 weeks ago

  • Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures   12 years 51 weeks ago

Wow! This is the first time I've heard about Pacman 2! It seems so interesting and I think I'm gonna try this soon. From what I've read, it has more adventures in it and the graphics are upgraded. Thanks a lot for sharing!

I mean, I'll give you the point that each button does something specific and if you bothered to play the other games, especially sons of liberty, you'd at least have an incling of an idea of how to use each one. However I won't let you take so many points off the game for its allegedly 'difficult controls'. Each button does something specific, not to bewilder the gamer, but to empower them. There's no point in using an all-in-one button on a console which has two two-axis joystics, a D-pad and 13 buttons. Had you have paid attention to the spiel, or read the manual, or realised that this is a stealth game for the most part, you would not have been adversaried with the contols. in fact you would have loved them. learn how to play MGS and don't mark things down due to your own incompetance

  • I Didn't Beat This Game: Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies   12 years 51 weeks ago

Ahhh...I never thought about it that way. I'm trying to get 100 skill points in each of my character's main skills before revamping them to a new job. Which will take several more eons.

  • Mass Effect: Genesis   12 years 51 weeks ago

Dragon Age: Origins didn't get a GOTY edition until about three months before DA2 was released, so if they make one, a holiday release seems likely.

The argument against it is that the PS3 pretty much already got a GOTY release with most of the DLC included, and that ME2 never saw one giant expansion like Dragon Age: Awakenings. I hope it happens though, even though I already paid money (mostly half-off deals) for all the DLCs.

If I remember, the purpose of changing classes often is you can build up skill points in another class really fast, and save them up for the class you want to spend the skill points in.

  • Mass Effect: Genesis   12 years 51 weeks ago

Still waiting for that Game of the Year version to appear on the horizon.

  • I Didn't Beat This Game: Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies   12 years 51 weeks ago

I think it's perfectly acceptable and understandable that you didn't beat Dragon Quest IX. It's a hard game to beat--takes time and patience and willpower--and considering you had almost exactly the same team as me (I remained a minstrel), I reached the main end boss around late level 30s, and then had to at least grind everyone until levels 45-50 before I seemed to stand even a chance. Maybe having a warrior would've made it easier? I noticed you changed jobs frequently early on, too.

Even still, "beating" DQ9 is not necessarily rewarding. In fact, it's the opposite. Once you kick the main bad dude to the curb, you'll have a thousand more quests to do. It really feels only like half the game done at that point. However, you do get control of a flying train to help you reach previously unaccessible areas for new recipes and treasures. Plus, there's always grottos to scour. I still play every now and then, especially on the weekends as I like to hop online and download the special guests for my inn and see what's available to buy at the DQVC. Come July, I will have been playing this game for a year straight. My current hours logged is something like 130+...yikes!

Thanks for making Paul a thief! Hope he had a tricky turban. Tara made Paul her priest. I made Tara my thief. Sorry, no one named Greg in my party.

Don't you know you're supposed to look both ways before crossing traffic?! This game looks like a lot of fun.

  • Mass Effect: Genesis   12 years 52 weeks ago

so does one launch mass effect Genesis on the 360?

  • L.A. Noire - Video   13 years 1 day ago

Game looks pretty fantastic for a number of reasons: love the interrogation scene (except the part where you had to repeat the convo), loved the on-foot chase scene, particularly the fast-forwarded part, lol. I get a good vibe from the game: want to play.

  • Portal 2   13 years 1 day ago

Love the minute by minute reviews you make. This title is excellent indeed, also, like it's predecesor is most likely running for game of the year. Good job!

  • Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters   13 years 1 week ago

I found this game accidently not long ago, and I'm glad I did.

A lot of replay value too, if you fail the first times.

Young McDohl is actually wearing a green bandana. I love this game, and when it was released it was the perfect filler until Final Fantasy VII dropped a couple months later. The game's beginning is a slow crawl, and that's something carried over in other titles from the series, but if you keep at it, there's certainly a great chance it'll win you over. Getting your castle and collecting the 108 Stars of Destiny is where it all begins falling into place.

  • Suikoden   13 years 1 week ago

Would agree with the others that the best part of this game is collecting everyone. I loved watching my castle fill out with all the heroes. Can kinda see where Mass Effect 2 might have looked to for inspiration.

Suikoden 2 is better though. :D

  • Suikoden   13 years 1 week ago

I am glad to see that you continued to play past the first hour. You still haven't got to the great stuff -- namely the variety of battles and recruiting 108 characters -- so you will be in for a treat later on. This is one of my favorite games ever, and I think it will win you over by the time you complete it.

  • World of Goo   13 years 1 week ago

Hard to believe it's been so long since the game came out. I bought it on WiiWare at full price ($15, still that price on WiiWare) and enjoyed it quite a bit. I should really go back and try the OCD challenges, I remember getting stuck on a few of them in the first world and quitting.

  • World of Goo   13 years 1 week ago

This was a fun game. Was it really THAT long ago that it came out? Wow. I need to go back and play this more. I never finished it.

  • Dragon Age: Origins   13 years 2 weeks ago

My opinion on the presentation actually makes me pretty intrigued about Dragon Age 2, which from what I understand, borrowed quite a bit from Mass Effect 2 in terms of... everything. I'll get around to it someday, also interested to see if the haters just hate it because it's not super hardcore anymore or if there are serious issues.
